NVIDIA
Joins Forces with Jacob Komar, Twelve-Year-Old Founder of Computers for
Communities;
Silicon
Valley Companies Work Together to Provide Technology Resources to Those in Need
SANTA CLARA,
CA—DECEMBER 9, 2004—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) today announced that
it is hosting Silicon Valley’s first “Computers for Communities” event. A
Connecticut-based non-profit organization, Computers for Communities was founded
in 2001 by Jacob Komar, now twelve years old, after he discovered a roomful of
discarded computers at his sister’s school and realized there must be a better
use for them. His premise was simple: collect computers that are to be
discarded, then refurbish and redistribute them to those in need.
NVIDIA has set up a
temporary warehouse for employees who would like to donate and refurbish used
computers, components, and peripherals. Companies including Adobe, Cadence,
Synopsys, and United Micro are also participating in the event by donating their
employees’ time and resources to transform the donated hardware into updated
systems.
“By distributing
computers which would be thrown out anyway, we are able to help more students
acquire the basic tools they need to succeed in today’s world,” said Komar.
“We were impressed by
the simplicity and the sincerity of Jacob’s vision,” said Stephanie Luck,
NVIDIA’s community relations manager. “NVIDIA is always looking for ways to give
back to the community, and we liked the idea of directing the technology
orientation of our company toward a technology-focused charitable activity.”
“Computers for
Communities is a great way to give back to the community while supporting a
program that sets a positive example for others who want to make a difference.
Synopsys is engaged in inspiring the next generation of technology leaders like
Jacob, and providing access to computers can help families increase educational
opportunities in meaningful ways,” added Erin Brennock, senior manager,
Community Relations and Government Affairs, Synopsys.
Kathy Wheeler, senior
manager, Global Community Involvement, Cadence Design Systems, Inc., commented:
“Cadence is proud to be a supporter of the Computers for Communities project.
This event demonstrates the ingenuity that local companies often bring to
community support and giving programs in Silicon Valley. Today the computer is
an essential part of learning and fueling creativity, and we are pleased to be
able to participate by providing volunteers and essential components.”
On NVIDIA’s “Family
Night,” the families and children of employees will participate in hardware
collection and refurbishing. Jacob Komar will be onsite at NVIDIA on Family
Night to volunteer his time.
“We thought it was
important to include families in this initiative, because it’s a hands-on lesson
in how to help those who are less fortunate,” added Luck. “Even the smallest
child can help with activities such as sorting computer parts.”
In mid-December, NVIDIA
will donate the fully-functional computers to families through three charitable
organizations:
· InnVision
· RAFT (Resource Area For Teachers)
· TSCC (3rd Street Community Center)
